a tweet that leaks the culture war between writers
this stopped me in my tracks yesterday
Elle Nash is an esteemed badass part of the indie lit scene and tangential to a hero of many, Giancarlo DiTrapano, the New York scene of badasses, here dunking on the sweet homebody tech-infused “thoughtgirls” of Substack and San Francisco: two kinds of writers, the former confessional, the latter prescriptive; it’s true Sherry’s book of advice is absurd, from a stay-at-home daughter who’s never been in trouble, whereas Elle is a mother getting her MFA in Glasgow while being chic punk and incredibly true to her soul, whereas the techies are busy writing their necessary and redundant 10,000 hours of interior monologue rooted in fear of not being protected—this is before the spiritual awakening, before generosity and kindness and humility. Anyway, this tweet seems representative of two seas meeting, two groups who both treat writing and thinking as sacred; could be an interesting culture war. I’d probably take indie lit; I think the tech industry rejects who are still rich aren’t that cool, and represent to me who I could have been if I never did drugs, stayed the course, got on MBA or some shit, and strove to look like all the others with courses and philosophical ideas, whereas I just (ideally) dump out the soul in the raw and don’t care to produce or edit it for maximum views, and simply life my life in narrow rows of footsteps, while eternity and awareness blister my ears all of the time, and I live in the thrum without expecting additional rewards from it.
